Seven ultra-tough members of the Caperers Mountain Walking Group did a six-day canoe trip down the mighty Orange River through the dry Namib Desert. We normally do day long mountain walks on Table Mountain or one of the many rugged mountains within an easy distance from Cape Town every month. Les, "The Dictator", organised this Felix Unite River Adventures canoe trip and we jumped at the opportunity. I had done the trip a few times with my family but the others were first-timers. The stretch of river we did has some small rapids where you can capsize but it is generally an easy paddle. The river does the work for you. Anyway, capsizing, falling out of your canoe, getting muddy and wet is part of the adventure. Summers are hot, winter days are nice and warm, nights can get cold as desert skies are absolutely clear and radiate heat fast. Just think of those Southern Hemisphere stars! The Milky Way; have you ever actually seen the Milky Way? Wow! Get into your sleeping bag with a mug of hot chocolate and just look. Real stars have no soundtrack, you might hear rapids in the distance or the quiet chat of late-nighters around the glowing coals of a died-down fire, but that is the sound of silence.
